DETOXIFICATION
by
Victor H. Bagnall D.O

In any program of Nutritional Therapy there is a very definite need to begin with a short period devoted to detoxifying the body. There are many ways to do this, all aimed at the same results, namely, ridding the body of the poisons of metabolism that have accumulated in every cell of the body. The author has borrowed from other practitioners in putting together his own program, which has served him well, although variations of this and other programs will probably effect the same good results.

A liquid fast of three days duration starts the program. The juice of six lemons, six oranges and three grapefruit is diluted with sufficient water to make a gallon of liquid. Each day this amount must be consumed, a glassful at a time at intervals during the day. Each morning for the three days, a coffee enema should be taken upon arising in the morning. Brew a pot of regular coffee, allow to cool to room temperature, and use full strength, in an enema bag, allowing to flow slowly into the bowel while in a reclining position. Retain the fluid as long as possible up to about five minutes. Coffee, instilled into the bowel this way, stimulates the liver and greatly increases the detoxification process. The effects of caffeine are not felt as it would be in drinking coffee. The use of the coffee enema was originally tried as a result of studying the works of the famous cancer specialist, Dr. Max Gerson, and has proven most effective in the author’s experience.

On the fourth day and for three days thereafter, the use of an all rice diet is often effective, using only organic brown rice in small amounts about six times a day. No other food is allowed, but the patient may have herb teas and plain water as desired. Nothing is allowed on the rice except a naturally fermented soy sauce such as Tamari Soy.

On the morning of the seventh day the patient starts the day with an eight ounce glass of fresh carrot juice. Mid-morning he has another eight ounce glass which may be all carrot juice or half celery juice and half carrot juice. At noon an eight ounce glass of half carrot juice and half raw beet juice is taken. Mid-afternoon, eight ounces of raw carrot juice, and at dinner time another eight ounces of half carrot juice and half celery juice. The order in which these combinations are used doesn’t really matter but all three juices should be used in these amounts for three days. The patient may also have herb teas and water at any time as desired.

On the tenth day the patient starts back to a solid diet with a raw apple upon arising, followed by a light green salad about an hour later, using oil and vinegar and honey mixed together as a dressing. From here on the menu varies with the patient and with the physician’s own observations and desires. The main thing is to start lightly with small meals, using only natural, unprocessed and unchemicalized foods, and as much of the food intake as possible should be raw. The patient should be encouraged to continue the use of raw vegetable juices as a permanent part of his dietary regimen, and the nutritional supplements should be started and continued on a permanent basis. The author believes that a high protein, low carbohydrate diet of all natural foods is the best for maintaining the health and well-being in the human economy, with special attention to the daily use of natural food supplements, vitamins and minerals as determined by the physician.

Note. I have used this personally several times over the years with excellent results of vastly increased energy and vitality.
